Cleaning up the future: The road to smart waste management

“A transition to clean energy is about making an investment in our future.”

We all come across quotes like this one, more often than not. I was just reading up an article from Indiatimes on how the Paris government had declared an air emergency at an AQI of 114. Meanwhile, in Delhi, it has crossed 999, and somehow, it doesn’t scare the masses. I remember when I was moving out of the city (due to the pandemic), I was in a hurry to catch my flight and as I was on my way to the airport, I was crossing South extensionPresumably, a posh area of the city, only to find out that dustbins were overflowing and stray animals were feeding themselves out of it. I also noticed more than a couple of street food vendors selling the oh-so-famous chole bhature and rajma chawal near that filth. Even though I was not surprised, I sure was disappointed. I thought to myself “Is this how it’s supposed to be?” and then instantly thought about the people who had no choice but to have lunch from these street food joints. This is a leading health hazard in the country, a country where anything and everything is possible, where everyone has the liberty to hold a political opinion and march for the causes that they are passionate for, but somehow no one seems to be passionate enough for sanitation and basic well-being. In a country where everything in the name of “saaf-safai” is appreciated before the festival season, we somehow end up with even more filth than we managed to clean up.

The reason I’m rambling about this right now is that we have a solution in front of us, a solution that will save millions of lives and money, potentially taking our crashing economy to a more stabilized zone. It’s what is called “smart waste management”. You might think that it’s a bit far-fetched for a country like ours, but we’re the ones who need to support it for it to grow.

The Problem with conventional waste management bins around us is that the Collection vehicle often collects wastes from bins when they are not completely filled. This is inefficient and causes loss of labour and fuel. Another problem is that people start throwing garbage on the ground when bins are not emptied on time. On the basis of the type of waste, the global market is segmented into solid waste (Residential, commercial, municipal), agricultural, special (healthcare, sewage sludge), and e-waste. We need to start looking at it that way.

Coming to what’s the next step here,

IoT is leading the way towards smart-bins and it will save a lot of our time and efforts. Internet of Waste Management by Arnowa is a complete platform which helps waste management to be handled not only by different industries, universities, towns and cities in the form of Fleets and Waste Bins but will also help with client management and billing solution.

With the help of sensors & gateways, we provide you real-time monitoring, territory allocation & an analytical engine to help your surroundings increase operational efficiency & reduce costs by curbing penalties incurred via generating timely alerts, recommending best pickup routes, automating everyday operations & more. This State of Art solution uses Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning to provide in-depth analysis and co-relations to give a deep insight into how things work.
